Everyone is or has that life-saving computer expert friend who helps you each time your computer starts acting up. Be it a deadly virus or a simple application crash, the friend has always got your back. Now consider a situation where the friend is busy attending a wedding in some foreign land; how do you get his help? This is where a remote desktop protocol (RDP) based feature such as Microsoft Quick Assist comes into play.

Allowing another authorized user to control your computer, remote desktop-based software makes life easier for individuals or companies receiving IT help or instructions from a third party not physically present.

Part 1. What to Know About Microsoft Quick Assist?

Developed by Microsoft, Quick Assist is a built-in Windows feature that helps users view and control another computer over the internet, allowing them to add or remove files and install programs but mainly to troubleshoot any software-related issues while being far away.

Introduced with Windows Quick Assist is a built-in Windows 10 and 11 feature. It is a cloud-based feature that is free for the host computer and the assistance provider; however, both parties need a strong internet connection.

Previous Windows versions, such as the WindowsXP, also had a similar feature named "Windows Remote Assistance".

Part 2. How to Use Quick Assist: Step-by-Step Guide

Quick Assist, as the name suggests, is an application made to be used by IT experts and computer technicians working in professional settings, so the interface can be a little overwhelming for starters, but not so much when you follow the proper steps. Here, we have a step-by-step solution for downloading, installing, and enabling Windows Quick Assist on your computer.

    1. How to Download and Install Quick Assist on Windows?

    Being a built-in Windows application, MS Quick Assist is already present in most Windows OS PCs by default. Simply go ahead and type "Quick Assist" inside the Start menu search bar; chances are you already have it installed; if not, you need to follow these steps;

Download Quick Assist Through the Microsoft Store

Look for Microsoft Store in your taskbar or start menu, open the store and search for Quick Assist, click the Get button, and then allow Windows to download and install the application.

Install Quick Access through Apps & Features

Another way to make a Quick Assist download on your Windows PC is to head over to settings, click on "Apps", and head to the "Apps and features" section. Click on "Manage options features" and then "Add a feature", search for Quick Assist, and install the application.

    2. How to Enable Quick Assist in Windows?

Enabling and running the Quick Assistance Windows 10 application requires a few steps that are to be repeated each time you use the application; we have listed them below:

Step 0: Check whether both PCs are running a Windows 10 or even a later version; any previous version or Windows will not run the Quick Assist app. Windows versions can be checked through the "Run" window; open it by pressing Windows + R, input winver, and click OK.

Step 1: Search for Quick Assist in the Search bar and run the application; here, you will see a dialog box that allows you to do both offer and receive assistance.

Step 2: If you are offering assistance, simply click on "assist another person", which will generate a security code for you.

Step 3: Before getting your security code, you would need to sign up or login into a Microsoft account.

Step 4: As soon as you receive the security code after your login, you will have a few minutes of time before the code expires. So, hurry up and share this code with the PC that requires your virtual assistance.

Step 5: Notify the person using the other computer to simply input your security code and click on the share screen.

Step 6: You, being the assistance provider, will now see a dialog box that will ask you to either take control or simply view the screen and select accordingly.

Step 7: Your receiver will now get a final warning, which, when closed down, will allow you to completely take over their computer and help them with any and all computer issues.

Part 3. How to Fix Quick Assist Not Working?

Despite being a Microsoft application, the Quick Assist app is often reported to have a lot of issues; we have listed fixes for some of the most common ones.

Check if Remote Assistance is Enabled

All operations inside the Quick Assist are dependent on the Remote Assistance feature, so it's essential for remote assistance to be enabled when using the application. In order to turn it ON, simply press "Win + I", go to "system", click on "remote desktop", and enable Remote Assistance.

    Check Firewall and Security Settings

Third-party software and firewalls can often block remote assistance software by considering them a security breach. Make sure that your third-party security software allows QuickAssist Microsoft to operate smoothly.

    Troubleshoot Quick Assist

Have you enabled remote assistance, have the correct version of Windows, and have no firewall problems but are still experiencing problems with Quick Assist? Simply run the Windows Troubleshooter, which will identify, fix, or even offer solutions to the problem you experience.

Part 4. The Best Third-Party Remote Access Software as an Alternative

If you are someone who has been experiencing problems with Quick Assist and are looking for a simpler remote access software that allows you to do all the same, then we suggest you try Avica Remote Desktop. Unlike conventional software, Avica will not have a ton of requirements, and offer some fantastic benefits. Some of these benefits include:

    • Security: Avica offers its users End to End AES-256 encryption. In simpler terms, it will encrypt information in such a way that it can only be decrypted once it reaches its destination, thus offering excellent security for your data.
    • Low Latency: Remote access software can often be laggy due to a higher latency; Avica, on the other hand, uses a "patented streaming protocol". This feature allows it to have a stable connection for both the receiver and the assistant.
    • User-Friendly Interface: Avica understands that not everyone is a computer geek, which is why the company has designed its remote access software to be super simple, allowing you to give your clients or even IT specialist friends an easier time.
    • Drag and Drop Files: When remotely accessing a computer, Avica allows you to exchange files from one computer to another with just a simple drag and drop.

Well, there's more. Apart from all we have mentioned above, Avica also offers a privacy mode, digital boards, clipboard, game controller support, virtual screen, group monitoring, voice sync, and even more that you can find on the Avica website.
